The 'Volunteer with Orphaned Elephants' is a program operated by an orphanage and breeding sanctuary for rescued, injured, or abused wild elephants. As of 2019, there are 86 elephants and there are 48 mahouts who take care of the elephants. The orphanage is very popular among local and foreign tourists. The main attraction is the opportunity to observe the bathing elephants from the broad river bank as the herd interacts socially, bathing, and playing.
As an Elephant volunteer, you will be learning everything from the anatomy of an elephant to the complex history that has affected elephant populations in Sri Lanka.
The primary focus of our elephant volunteer project is to help the day to day running of the orphanage. Working under the direction of the mahouts( the person in charge of caring for the elephants) and with other volunteers.
You will live in a lovely guest house near the project site with comfortable single, double rooms, and western toilets. Every room is provided with a ceiling fan, individual beds, and mosquito nets. You will have the chance to see the real Sri Lankan lifestyle as this area is more rural.
